Algebraic geometry and the evolution of species

SPEAKER: Marta Casanellas, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. TITLE: Algebraic geometry and the evolution of species ABSTRACT: Many statistical models of evolution can be viewed as algebraic varieties. As a consequence, tools from algebraic geometry can add information in the phylogenetic reconstruction problem. Indeed, the generators of the ideal of a statistical model of evolution should allow to determine the tree formed by a set of living species. We will present methods of phylogenetic inference based on algebraic geometry and, comparing to other exiting methods, we will discuss what are the advantages of these new methods. We will also see how an in-depth study of the geometry of the model leads to major improvements on the reconstruction methods based on algebraic geometry. » Read more

    Seminar: Wavelet-Based Mapping

Title: Wavelet-Based Mapping of Renal Cortex Perfusion: Synchronization Revealed from Laser Speckle Imaging Speakers: Niels-Henrik Holstein-Rathlou and Alexey Brazhe. Abstract: Full- field speckle technique provides means of real-time imaging of superfi cial blood perfusion. We suggest to use wavelet-based mapping of instantaneous frequency and phase for each pixel of an image to identify diff erent synchronous patterns. We use the kidney to demonstrate the possibility to reveal frequency and phase entrainments in the form of waves and transient clusters to determine an extent of synchronization in renal cortex dynamics. » Read more
